Our practice specializes in veteriary dentistry, what does this mean?

Allmost all our pets suffer from dental disease in the course of their life. Not only does it cause pain locally, which reduces quality of life, but chronic pain affects the nervous sysem and often negatively impacts other painful conditions such as osteoarthritis. Not to mention chronic infection affecting other organs such as the kidney, heart and liver.

In this segment, we dive a little deeper into veterinary dentistry, to explain why we are so passionate about dentistry and what we do every day.

Dieases we treat in dogs and cats

Paradontal disease

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease affecting the tissues supportin the teeth. It is the disease we treat most often in the practice: In dogs, 80-90% of dogs are already affected at the age of 3 years old. Cats often suffer as well.

It is important to understand what periodontal disease is (it is not caused by calculus, as many believe, but plaque bacteria), how to diagnose it properly, and how to prevent, treat and manage it. Even patients that have relatively clean and white teeth may be affected, and smaller dogs are more susceptible.

Tooth resorption

Tooth resorption is a condition where the mineralized structure of the tooth lost, for many patiens resulting in chronic pain. It cannot be diagnosed and treated properly without dental radiography.

Cats often suffer from TR - tooth resorption (still known to many owners and practicioners unders its previous name "FORL"), and it is so common, that we advice all cats over 5 years of age to undergo dental radigraphy even if their teeth look fine.

Dogs also oftes suffer from TR; the more dental radiographs we take, the more TR we treat.

How the dentistry story started for me

As many of our clients know, dentistry has been and still is a neglected field in veterinary medicine. Fortunately, this is changing, to the benefit of our patients oral and general health. Unfortunately though, my first dog Tara, who became a part of our family in Norway when I was ten, suffered from periodontal disease in age. It was then that I first became aware of veterinary dentistry as a real field, the importance of dental radiography. She got some help, but not the way she should have, and somehow the work I do will always be for her.

Anyway, returning to general practice in 2016, my awareness of dentistry made me unable to ignore the fact that most of the patients that were presented, often for other complains or simply for vaccinations, suffered from dental disease. I began to study dentistry, began to cooperate with emerging local specialists and specialists far away, that I met during my seminars, and have since been dedicated to the veterinary dental field. I am happy to say that in my experience the veterinary dental community is a sort of family, dedicated to share knowledge with other professionals and pet owners to help as many animals as possible.
